CHAPTER TWENTY

Questions and Answers

Walter Nowel

Communal Social Space

5pm

Walter was wearing his human avatar for once. He hadn't broken out the model in so long it lacked many of the features his main avatar had. His facial expressions were limited and it was missing a few add-ons he'd grown accustomed too. Sadly it was necessary for meeting in this realm. They didn't allow non-standard avatars within the Chinese netspace. This was a long distance connection anyway. The lag was quite noticeable. The small rickshaw stopped before the oriental restaurant. He climbed down clumsily and waved at the smaller oriental NPC. The Chinese driver tipped his wide straw hat and pulled back into traffic. For a moment he watched the footman disappear. This world was like many social realms. It reflected a point in history. Specifically the Yang Dynasty in 13th century China.

Walter was here to get some answers. Only after he'd started digging had he encountered the rumors of ghosts. The word ‘Gui,' had been repeated frequently. He'd been hampered by the language barrier. That was why he needed to meet an old acquaintance. When working on the game characters he'd become friends with the Chinese programmer. He knew the man was still on the Asian programming board. This was why he'd contacted his associate and asked to have dinner with the man, virtually.

Liam the poor soul had been online for three days straight. To every appearance the necromancer was a permanent entity within the world. There was one all-important question Walter wanted to ask. What happened when the servers went down? Would Liam vanish? There was a scheduled patch coming in a few days. It wasn't large but there was no way to stop it. That's what had spurned this meeting. Walter turned and walked up the stone steps. At his approach the double doors were opened by two kimono wearing girls. They spoke in the local historically correct Chinese dialect. The words automatically translated for him.

"Good Evening Lord. Welcome to the Golden Dragon," Both girls said in unison.

"I'm here to see Mr. Chisan," Walter said to the girls. A new NPC employee appeared from a nearby door. She stepped near then bowed as deeply as her formal white kimono would allow.

"I can show you to our private booths." The girl said pointing with a slim hand down the hall. Walter followed walking past several closed rice paper doors. He could see the shadows of people inside. Their words though were thoroughly muffled inside. The thin privacy screens were more than just for show. The woman stopped about halfway down and the girl slid the door open. Ji Chisan was already waiting but stood as the door opened.

"Walter, its been forever." He said in nearly perfect English.

"I agree. We both have been very busy though." Walter said entering the private booth.

"I've already taken the liberty of ordering for us, I hope you don't mind," Ji said coming around the table. He held out a hand which Walter warmly took.

"Not at all, you always had good taste," Walter admitted.
